Indonesian Travel Diaries – Swimming in Hot Springs

The hike up Mt Batur had been freezing cold, but the way back down was positively roasting… It was still early in the morning so the temperature wasn’t horrific, but we could feel the heat begin to rise around us…

By the time we were at the bottom we were a.) dying for a wee (overshare?) and b.) so. HOT. We said a fond goodbye to Wayan who’d looked after us so well on the hike – it seemed strange he’d been so quiet for the first part but we’d had a long chat and on the way down he was loudly (and badly 😉 ) singing No Woman No Cry… Actually – wait a minute – it was just me and Legs… I hope his song wasn’t a subtle hint 😂.

At the bottom of Mt Batur is Lake Batur – which contains lots of naturally hot springs which are open to swim in. They are absolutely beautiful.

We arrived at the hot springs and were shown to the changing rooms where the lockers and showers are. Word to the wise – they are mixed changing rooms. I just went into a shower cubicle to change. We were given a token for a free juice and snack, so we headed for our Balinese snack of deep fried banana (so. tasty) and fresh watermelon juice.

Then we headed in to the hot springs…

It was absolute heaven on our muscles, like a long hot bath… The view was STUNNING, and once again we found ourselves just taking in the view, gossiping about everything that had been going on in our lives and in a state of total awe that we’d just hiked a mountain to see the sunrise, only to come back down it and now be luxuriating in hot springs…

It was just the second part in what was without doubt the best day we were to have in Bali…

Oh my goodness, I thought that the hike up the mountain would’ve made your day special enough, but now this immediately afterwards?! Sounds PERFECT! I would love to lie back in these hot springs, deep fried banana in hand hahaha (not a euphemism, I realised how bad it sounded after I typed it) 😂 The thought of your guide singing you down the mountain did make me giggle as well! As always, your photos are stunning and totally wanderlust-inducing!
